How Objects Move
Rationale
Through a deeper understanding of the way objects move and the factors that influence movement, we are better able to understand the way our physical world works and solve more challenging problems.
Investigation Into
- Different ways objects and living things move
- How size and shape impact movement
- Rolling, Sliding, and Bouncing
- Pushing and Pulling
Essential Questions
- How do size and shape impact the movement of objects and living things?
- Why do some objects roll and some objects slide?
- Why do different balls bounce at different heights?
- How can we use push and pull forces to design a toy?
Future Action
Your students will have a better understanding of how factors such as size and shape impact on the way objects move. They will be able to use this knowledge to choose objects to serve a particular purpose and apply this understanding when solving physical problems they face, for example when constructing something.

Animal Movement
Your students will consider the different ways animals move depending on their body parts, size and shape, and design a playground for their chosen animal to use.

Roll and Slide
Your students will predict and test which objects in the classroom roll and/or slide using a ramp and use a class Venn Diagram to sort the objects.

Bounce
Your students will investigate how high different balls bounce before creating a game for others to play that involves bouncing balls.

Push and Pull
Your students will learn about push and pull forces and create a toy for a younger student that can be moved by a pull or push force.
