Effects of Push and Pull Forces

Rationale

By learning about the strength and direction of forces, we can better understand the effects of force on the shape and movement of objects in our world.

Essential Questions

  • How do push and pull forces impact the way objects move?
  • How do push and pull forces change the shape of objects?
  • What are the impacts of gravity?
  • How do forces relate to floating and sinking?
  • How do animals use push and pull forces to move through different environments?

Future Action

Your students will understand that all forces have strength and direction. They will recognise that push and pull forces can change the movement and shape of objects. They will consider, identify and appreciate the effects of force on the world around them.

Pretesting and Familiarisation (2 tasks)
Sharing What I Know About Push and Pull Forces
Your students will share what they know about the effects of push and pull forces on the movement and shape of objects.

Push and Pull Forces Glossary
Your students are going to become familiar with words that they will use during this learning sequence.

Learning Opportunities (5 tasks)
Force Detectives
Your students will learn about forces as they act as 'force detectives'.

Changing Shape
Your students will explore how classroom materials such as playdough, paper and pipe cleaners change shape when forces are applied.

Gravity
Your students will learn about the force of gravity and contribute to a class story about a day at school with no gravity.

Buoyancy
Your students will explore buoyant force by predicting and testing which objects will float and sink and making a foil boat that can carry weight.

Building with Forces
Your students will use craft and/or construction materials to build a device that needs to have a push or pull applied to make it work.

Demonstration of Understanding (1 tasks)
Sharing What I Learnt About Push and Pull Forces
Your students will share what they have learnt during this learning sequence by adding, removing or changing what they wrote or drew on their 'What I Know' sheet.
