Earth and the Solar System

Rationale

Through a deeper understanding of Earth and the Solar System, we are better able to appreciate the planet that we live on.

Investigation Into

  • Energy we get from the Sun.
  • Planets in the Solar System and similarities and differences between the planets.
  • Other types of objects in the Solar System.
  • The Scale of the Solar System.

Essential Questions

  • What energy does the Earth get from the Sun?
  • What are planets in the Solar System and how are they classified?
  • What are other types of objects that can be found in the Solar System?
  • What is the scale of the planets in the Solar System?
  • What is the scale of the Earth and the Moon?

Future Action

Your students will develop a curiosity about the objects in the Solar System. They will be able to name each of the planets in order from closest to farthest from the Sun. Your students will be to participate in discussions about the importance of the energy which we get from the Sun. They will appreciate the techniques used by sciences to learn about our Solar System and be curious to learn about future discoveries of objects in space.
